Brain gym training is a series of educational philosophical, program, resources, materials, processes, and movements intended to enhance the brain and learning abilities. The term “brain gym” also refers to the registered trademark Brain Gym International in California.
Brain Gym International is devoted to the philosophy that moving with intention results in maximum learning. It involves movement based programs and resources for both young people and adults to achieve better brain health and performance. It brings dramatic changes to one’s lifestyle in various areas, such as relationship, attitude, physical coordination, self-responsibility, organizational skills, academics, concentration and focus, and memory.
History of brain gym training
Brain gym was created in the 1980s, when Dr. Paul Dennison and his wife Gail E. Dennison were looking for effective ways to help individuals with learning disabilities. They consulted research from developmental specialists about the use of physical movements to improve learning capability.
Then they developed the so-called Educational Kinesiology or Edu-K which became known as the Educational Kinesiology Foundation. In 2000, it was called Brain Gym International, and is now being used in over 87 countries and has been translated into over 40 languages.
Brain gym in the classroom
Brain gym is adapted to many educational institutions because it is effective in helping students improve their learning capabilities and overall mental and physical alertness, as well as aiding them with releasing stress, and expending excess energy. Brain gym exercises are simple and fun, and kids will love them. They can be done inside the classroom in groups, or individually.
Squeeze in brain gym exercises in between your classes and notice dramatic improvements in your students’ academic performance. Here are some brain gym exercises that you can do:
Cross crawl
This is done by touching the left elbow to the right knee while moving the right arm backwards. Then touch the right elbow to the left knee while moving the left arm backwards. Shift back and forth between the two positions continuously for two minutes. This can be performed while standing or seating.
Cross crawl can help improve student’s concentration and burn excess energy. The movements engage both halves of the brain, so they will work together towards better synergy.
Figure 8s
Ask the students to draw a figure 8 in the air or on a piece of paper, using their non-dominant hand. They should draw it loosely and quickly and do it for about one minute before starting an activity.
Using the non-dominant hand engages the portion of the brain that is responsible for creativity. It loosens up the muscles in the wrist and arm, and is an effective warm up before writing or any creative activity.
Brain buttons
Ask the students to press their fingers against their foreheads, in between their eyebrows and hairline. With eyes closed, they should breathe slowly. Ask them to breath in for five seconds, hold their breath for five seconds, release it for five seconds, and repeat the entire process three times.
Brain buttons are effective in releasing frustration with lessons such as math, and is ideally practiced in-between lessons.
